Demystifying the Federal Open Market Committee

Much is written in the press about Janet Yellen, Federal Reserve Chairwoman, and the “Fed.” But what does this mean and why should you care? This session will provide a brief history of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), describe the make-up of the committee, and the mechanics of how it works. The session will include a discussion on the current challenges facing the FOMC and how its decisions can and will affect your department.

Bernhard Heine

Bernhard is fluent in German, and lives with his wife and 2 children in Marshfield, Massachusetts.

John Villela, CFA
Mr. Villela serves as a Managing Principal and Portfolio Manager at Longfellow Investment Management. John leads Enhanced Cash and Short Duration portfolio management with a special focus on the credit sector.

Prior to joining Longfellow in 2005, John worked at State Street Research (SSR) as a portfolio analyst on the fixed income team . He was also a member of the Market Based Group, focusing on $4 billion in credit assets along with Short/Intermediate Duration accounts. Prior to SSR, John was a trader at Standish Mellon. John’s trading experience includes credit, ABS, governments and fixed income derivatives. He brings additional investment, sales and relationship experience from prior roles at Lehman Brothers and HSBC.

John has over 20 years of industry experience and holds an MBA and BA in Mathematics from Boston College. He has held Series 7 and 63 licenses. John is a CFA charterholder, a member of the CFA Institute and a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society.
